How to Apply for Unemployment Insurance? 

To apply for unemployment insurance, the worker must follow these steps: 

  1. Gather the necessary documentationPersonal documents such as CPF, identity card (RG), work permit, termination of employment contract (TRCT) and the unemployment insurance application provided by the employer. 
  2. Access the Emprega Brasil PortalThe application can be made online, through the Emprega Brasil Portal, or in person at the Regional Superintendencies of Labor and Employment (SRTE), the National Employment System (SINE) or other offices accredited by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security. 
  3. Fill in the ApplicationFill in all the information requested on the application form correctly. 
  4. Wait for AnalysisAfter applying, the worker must wait for the benefit to be analyzed and approved. 

How many unemployment insurance installments can I receive? 

The number of installments of unemployment insurance can vary from three to five, depending on the length of time worked and the number of previous applications made by the worker. See below for the number of installments in each case: 

  • First request: 
  • You will receive four installments if you can prove employment for a minimum of 12 months and a maximum of 23 months in the last 36 months. 
  • You will receive five installments if you can prove that you have been employed for at least 24 months in the last 36 months. 
  • Second request: 
  • You will receive three installments if you can prove that you have been employed for a minimum of 9 months and a maximum of 11 months in the last 36 months. 
  • You will receive four installments if you can prove employment for a minimum of 12 months and a maximum of 23 months in the last 36 months. 
  • You will receive five installments if you can prove that you have been employed for at least 24 months in the last 36 months. 
  • Other requests: 
  • You will receive three installments if you can prove that you have been employed for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 11 months in the last 36 months. 
  • You will receive four installments if you can prove employment for a minimum of 12 months and a maximum of 23 months in the last 36 months. 
  • You will receive five installments if you can prove that you have been employed for at least 24 months in the last 36 months. 

Calculation of the Unemployment Insurance Amount 

The amount of unemployment insurance is calculated based on the average of the worker's last three salaries. The table for calculating the benefit is updated annually, based on the minimum wage and other economic factors. For 2024, the calculation table is as follows: 

Track 1: Average salary up to R$ 1,858.17 

  • Portion value: 80% of average salary 

Track 2: Average salary between R$ 1,858.18 and R$ 3,097.26 

  • Amount of the installment: 50% of what exceeds Band 1 + R$ 1,486.54 

Track 3: Average salary above R$ 3,097.26 

  • Value of the installment: R$ 2,091.84 (fixed value) 

Documents Required to Apply for Unemployment Insurance 

To apply for unemployment insurance, you need to present the following documents: 

  • Application for unemployment insurance (provided by the employer); 
  • Termination of Employment Contract (TRCT); 
  • Work and Social Security Card (CTPS); 
  • Identification document (RG, CNH or other); 
  • Individual Taxpayer Registration (CPF); 
  • Proof of PIS/PASEP registration; 
  • FGTS statement or document proving deposits; 
  • Proof of the last 2 payslips or pay slips for domestic workers. 
  • Special Situations 

There are some special situations that also guarantee the right to unemployment insurance. These include 

  • Artisanal fishermanDuring the closed season (prohibition of fishing to preserve species), artisanal fishermen are entitled to the benefit. 
  • Domestic workerAs long as you have been dismissed without just cause and have worked as a domestic for at least 15 months in the last 24 months. 
  • Rescued workerEmployee who has been rescued from conditions analogous to slavery is also entitled to unemployment insurance.
